black womanhood is not up for debate

black womanhood is not up for debate

Shattered Silence is a social campaign that addresses the intersectional struggles faced by Black women and femmes who are single or under-supported moms, sexual assault survivors, and domestic violence victims. Recognizing that these experiences are often interconnected, we aim to highlight the compounded challenges these women face due to racial disparities found within both a) the family policing system (CPS) and b) systems of aid that continuously overlook, deny and neglect the experiences of Black women. The Black Healing Collective seeks to create a supportive ecosystem that provides direct access to safe housing, therapy, and essential resources. Our goal is to ensure that Black women no longer have to choose between healing and survival, empowering them to thrive in spite of systemic inequalities.

SHATTERED silence IS a social campaign DEDICATED to

  1. Exposing Racial Disparities: Shedding light on the racial disparities within CPS, the over-policing of Black families, and the criminalization of poor people.

  2. Supporting Moms Wronged by CPS: Raising enough capital to provide Black women and femmes, who have been wronged by the family policing system, with the care and support they need to rebuild their lives.

  3. Supporting Sexual Assault Survivors: Highlighting the lack of resources and support for Black women and femmes who are sexual assault survivors— providing them access to free therapy for 6 months up to a year.

  4. Supporting Domestic Violence Victims: Recognizing the lack of support for Black women and femmes who are domestic violence victims— advocating for the need for safe and equitable housing through the provision of rent assistance and an emergency crisis fund.

DID YOU KNOW?

THAT ACCORDING TO THE U.S BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS THE AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD SPENDS $5K A MONTH ON HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURES.

over 70%

OF BLACK CHILDREN ARE RAISED BY SINGLE MOTHERS WHO OFTEN FACE FINANCIAL INSECURITY AND HAVE LIMITED TO ACCESS TO ADEQUATE RESOURCES SUCH AS CHILDCARE, HOUSING, AND EDUCATION.

ONE IN FIVE

BLACK WOMEN ARE SUBJECTED TO RAPE. AND THAT FOR EVERY ONE THAT DOES REPORT AT LEAST FIFTEEN DO NOT OUT OF FEAR OF RACIAL, SYSTEMIC AND SEXIST BIAS.

3X

BLACK WOMEN ARE THREE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE KILLED BY AN INTIMATE PARTNER THAN WHITE WOMEN. MANY VICTIMS LACK ACCESS TO SAFE HOUSING, LEGAL AID AND THERAPEUTIC COUNSELING.

WHY THIS WORK MATTERS?

Single & Under-supported moms

Black women are disproportionately targeted by Child Protective Services (CPS). Black families are three times more likely to be subjected to a CPS investigation than white families. Black mothers are often judged through the lens of societal norms shaped by whiteness. When their parenting doesn't align with these expectations, they are labeled negligent and risk losing their children.

  • Black families are 3x more likely to face CPS investigations than white families.

  • Black mothers are more likely to lose custody of their children due to systemic biases.

Black Women & Sexual Assault

Black women are disproportionately at risk of sexual violence. Nearly one in five Black women are survivors of rape, and 41% experience sexual coercion and other forms of unwanted sexual contact. For every Black woman who reports rape, at least 15 do not. Many survivors refrain from reporting their assault due to reasons such as shame, lack of support and resources, humiliation, fear of retaliation, racism, and a historical failure to believe and protect Black women. Black women are less likely to be believed than their counterparts.

  • Over 20% of Black women experience rape during their lifetimes— a higher share than among women overall.

  • Black women are less likely to receive post-assault care and support compared to their white counterparts

Black Women & Domestic Violence

Domestic violence remains a critical issue within the Black community, compounded by racial disparities in access to resources and justice. Black women face significant barriers in seeking help and protection from abuse.

  • 45% of Black women experience intimate partner violence in their lifetimes.

  • Black women are two and a half times more likely to be murdered by men than their white counterparts.

  • Black women are less likely to seek help due to fear of police involvement, systemic biases and the lack of available resouces.

our journey began in an unexpected moment, one that became a catalyst for transformation in my life.

transparency on the challenges of motherhood, especially for Black mothers, should be essential in reproductive justice conversations

Our approach
